Bomb craters Bomb craters

For Anita

July 17th 2001 Etna erupted big style. This normally would get me very interested, especially since Etna is practically in our neighbourhood, so to say (it's a 3 hour flight when flying direct). Unfortunately I was so much occupied with working I even didn't follow the news. Anita found this strange, and looking back I find it strange as well. Luckily Anita pushed for a short visit to the mountain and the island, and though I tried to bail out last minute we got going, and man, am I glad we did it.

My project and contract were done by end of July, as was the eruption - almost. We went for a week from the 8th to the 15th of August, and arrived just in the nick of time to see the last lava flows moving. Apart from crawling on and around Etna we travelled around the whole of Sicily and got a whole new, positive impression of the island we had visited before in April 1999 on our way to the Isole Eolie (Lipari Islands).
