Mosfellsheiði at 1 a.m.
Soon after leaving Reykjavik we gain some height and drive across Mosfellsheiði, a lava plain.
If you wonder what the "ð" is good for: it is pronounced like the "th" in "the". "Ð" is its big brother, and "þ" and "Þ" are its companions, pronounced like the "th" in "thick".
The scenery is really something even (or especially) at this time of the day. At 1 a.m. early morning allready dawns (or did the sun just never set?), and the fog lies on the lava rocks like a white glowing blanket.
On the horizon to the left, the flat cone of a shield volcano can be seen.
First we take a wrong exit, bringing us to some farm houses, but nothing looks like it could be ours. So we head back to the main road, and - voilß! - after 100m a fat sign announces Nupar III, our house.
Our House at Núpar
The house itself is almost too good to be true. Wooden, big living room, separated from the kitchen by a bar. Large deck with BBQ outside. Bathroom with shower, two bedrooms and a niche for the children in the living room.
The whole is set in a small birch groove, surrounded by a small brooke and a pond on two sides. This is awfully nice! The steam cloud in the background gives a hint heating and warm water is provided by using geothermal energy.
